Isaac Asimov’s story “The Last Question”.
Here is the Wikipedia entry. If you haven’t read the story, I recommend reading it before visiting this link, as there is a spoiler that might ruin your experience of this story which Asimov (a deeply spiritual and inspiring atheist who wrote many excellent books) considered his best story.
